Rod Through Block Journal

January 11, 2005

Did a dead cold start test, no engine heater just glow plugs, vala! it starts right up.  Put about 50 miles on it since injector stuck open problem, all seems to be holding, oh and it runs strong, very strong!

Hope it stays together until the spring when the track opens again!  I smell a mid 14 seconds!!!!!!

Ok first real snow of the season, here goes nothing!

The truck runs great, drive 15 miles to the location I am going to plow.  Turn into lot and drop plow, this feels good!  Got about 50 feet and what the heck, the truck dies, just like you turned the key off.

Now it is dark, very cold and snowing.  I spent about 5 minutes of cranking and gave up, pulled the truck to back of the lot and went on my way.  I waited about three days to call a tow truck because I knew how busy they would be with the weather.  Got the truck towed home on Friday.  Spent Friday night and Saturday trouble shooting.  No High Pressure Oil, hmm.  Got it pinned down to one injector, it seems to be stuck open and allowing high pressure oil to leak by.

Measure the poppet plate plate on each injector on the right bank, I find one that's at .007, the max is .004.  Ok now I am getting somewhere.  Replace the injector's o rings, and same thing! Remove the poppet from the injector and inspect, all looks good.  Put it back together and now it is measuring .004, must have been some trash stuck in the seal.  Put everything back together and the truck starts like nothing was ever wrong!  Change the oil and filter and all is well now!  I hope it stays that way!

Got a few more bugs worked out.  Small oil leak at one of the HPO rail plugs.  PS Pump Pulley out of aligned.  Found it easiest just to replace pump and pulley, all ok now.

Got a chance to get it on the hiway, I like it!  Top end is really really strong!

Now just a few more bugs, 4 corner strobes not working, gotta trouble shoot that next.

I think this it it, I am back on the road!

Now have the truck running.  Drove it for the first time today.  Just around the block, but it ran good.

Only a few details to wrap up, water pump leaking and power steering pump pulley pressed on further.

Probably going to have to put new Glow Plug relay on, gets way too hot during start up.

Here is a short video of the truck running.
